News & Tips:
What is Malware?
Malware stands for "malicious software." Malware is any kind of unwanted software that installs itself without your permission. Viruses, worms, and Trojan horses are examples of the types of malware found on the internet. Cybercriminals can fool you into downloading fake security software, claiming they are protecting your system against malware. The fake security software may then try to scam you into paying for a fake product, it may install malware, or attempt to steal your private information.
Don't click links in email messages and avoid websites that offer free software—especially free antivirus software. For more information, see Watch out for fake virus alerts.
