Web Design
Web Design Certificate
This Certificate program delves into the basic design theory,
planning,deployment, and ongoing development of a website
using WordPressor other blogging and content management systems. Basic
understanding of Windows and the internet are prerequisites. WordPress will
be used for all courses. To earn a certificate in web design, candidates must
complete the following five courses: Up and Running on the Web, Scripting
Languagesfor the Web, Designing for the Web, Maintenance and Security for
Web Servers,and Advanced Topics for the Web. This is also the preferred order
for courses to be taken.
Instructor Bio: Greg Fishbone has been designing and maintaining websites for
individuals, companies, and organizations for over 20 years, a period that has
seen web technology develop from a computer lab accessory to the backbone
of our modern economy and central player in our daily lives. Greg serves as
principal designer at Groton Pixel Web Design.

Up and Running on the Web
Create a blog or website using a popular blogging platform or content
management system. Students will become proficient in online account
management, dashboard usage, content creation, media library maintenance,
and video embedding. At the end of the course, keep your site online and have
all the tools necessary to be your own webmaster! No prior knowledge of HTML

Scripting Languages for the Web
An introduction to the most common scripting languages of the web: HTML
tags that tell a browser program how to render a page; CSS style instructions
that control the way page elements look; JavaScript code that can be used to
run programs within a web page; and PHP, a server-side scripting language
that generates dynamic HTML and CSS code. Students will learn how these
scripting languages interact to create web pages, and specific applications
of each scripting language to WordPress and other blogging and content

TEC 654 Designing for the Web
An introduction to theories of user experience design and user interface
design, together allowing the creation of websites that are more accessible,
easier to use, more pleasant to look at, and more appropriate to their content
and purpose. Students will learn how to use color, fonts, icons, and images
effectively, how to optimize navigation options, how to design for different
screen sizes, and how to overcome accessibility challenges. This course will
provide tools and techniques for implementing these changes on WordPress
and other blogging and content management systems. (16 hours) $279
TEC 655 Maintenance & Security for Web Servers
Students will learn how to set up an account on a hosted server, install local
instances of WordPress and other applications, create and restore backups,
work with a MySQL database, plug up security holes, and recover from

TEC 656 Advanced Topics for the Web
How do search engines like Google and Bing see your website, and how
can you achieve a higher rank that will allow users to more easily find
your site? How can you sell products or services through your website and
process online payments? How can you include photo galleries, web-based
forms, or portfolios into your website? How can you turn your website into
a specialized social network? This course will explore ways to optimize your
website and add new applications. (16 hours) $279
Intro to WordPress
This introductory, hands-on course will prepare you to develop a basic website or
blog using the most popular open source tool, WordPress. Students will create a
basic free site, learn how to create pages and subpages, and how to organize the
site in a logical way. It is recommended that you have a strong understanding of
how to use a computer and have an idea for a basic website or blog. (6hrs) $99

Effective Business Writing Techniques
The need for solid written communication is a must in the workplace. In fact,
effective written communication is cited as one of the most crucial skills for
workplace success. While assuming a basic knowledge of grammar use, this class
will provide the tips and tools to help avoid common mistakes and improve sentence
structure. A hands-on approach is used during class to allow participants to analyze
and compose letters, reports, and e-mails. Please bring 3-4 writing samples you
would like to work on. We will review basic grammar, assess current writing style
