Description:

SI Leaders are trained in planning and facilitating collaborative learning study sessions for MCC students who are enrolled in targeted courses. SI Leaders attend the course they are an SI Leader for and must have some availability (1-3 hours per week) either directly before or after class meeting times so that they can run study sessions outside of class. 

SI Leaders work 7-10 hours per week

Essential Job Functions:

  • Attend class meeting times (including labs) for the course/section you are an SI Leader for 
  • Communicate regularly with your SI faculty member
  • Model appropriate academic attitudes and behaviors to staff, faculty and students
  • Communicate student concerns and student referrals to other services with the appropriate Learning Specialist or with the Assistant Director or Director
  • Plan and facilitates one-two study sessions per week either directly before or after class (or depending on the availability of students enrolled in the course) 
  • Assist students in the development of appropriate time management and study skills to promote academic success
  • Maintain consistent communication with SI Learning Specialists regarding session meeting times and locations 
  • Track student attendance and upload study session plans to blackboard each week
  • Assist students in locating and submitting assignments online in Blackboard
  • Assist students in posting to a discussion board in Blackboard
  • Provide support to students through Blackboard, via email, or through on-campus meetings.
  • Communicate with students through Blackboard, email, or on campus, to provide support
  • Provide student success tips for best ways to communicate with professors
  • Aide in students’ understanding of course expectations
  • Attend monthly meetings
  • Distribute, collect, and return various supplemental instruction surveys

Position Requirements

  • An SI Leader must earn a B+ or better in the course they wish to be an SI Leader for 
  • SI Leaders must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, complete the required minimum 15-hour tutor training, attend monthly meetings
  • Demonstrate an ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with students. 
  • Participate in a required fifteen-hour SI Leader training
  • Ability to relate to students with various academic levels and needs
  • Be available 1-2 hours per week for any tutoring requests
  • Fulfill all SI requirements in order to become an Certified SI Leader
  • Participate in additional training to become a CRLA Level I certified tutor
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in the subject matter 
  • Enjoy tutoring the subject for which services are being provided 
  • Be able to explain concepts to others effectively 
  • Effectively communicate study strategies to ensure academic success 
  • Work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds 
  • Possess good organizational skills and complete paperwork in a timely manner 
  • Exhibit patience and positive attitudes in establishing an encouraging learning environment 
  • Good organizational, communication and basic computing skills.

Additional Information

Salary: $16.00 per hour. 
Resume, Interview and Faculty Recommendation Required. 
All SI Leaders will engage in required ongoing training beginning with attending a two-day training workshop prior to the start of the fall or spring semester. The required training on Monday, January 11th and Tuesday, January 12th, 2020 is unpaid.  

Note: in the event that a prospective SI Leader cannot attend one or more of these sessions an alternative training program may be arranged but it is not guaranteed. Other meetings/trainings are held throughout the academic year and SI Leaders are expected to participate.

SI Leaders will engage in the International Center for Supplemental Instruction (ICSI) training in order to become ICSI Certified SI Leaders. Requirements for the ICSI SI Leader Training are:

  • Attend all trainings and monthly meetings
  • End of Semester Reflection assignment
  • Attend 75% of class/lab commitment you make
  • SI session attendance steadily increases throughout the semester
  • 75% of your plans and attendance have been submitted

ACE PSLO 01 – 01 Application of Learning Preference Strategies Outcome: Peer Tutors and SI leaders will use instructional strategies that support multiple learning modalities during academic support sessions.
ACE PSLO 02 – 02 Awareness of Personal Learning Preference Outcome: Peer Tutors and SI Leaders will reflect on their practice of their own learning preferences and use this information to formulate a working study plan that is adaptable.
