Topics will include the explanation and illustration of computer hardware, software and peripherals. Students will be introduced to various legal software packages, including word processing, spreadsheets, database management, PowerPoint presentation, timekeeping and billing, litigation support, and more. Upon completion of this course the student will be equipped to assist practicing attorneys in the effective management of their law offices. Adhering to the guidelines provided by the American Association for Paralegal Education this course will cover: how law offices are legally structured; the law office/client relationship; legal and ethical concepts affecting law office management; administrative systems including fees, time-keeping and billing systems; management of clients' trust fund accounts; marketing and strategic planning; law library organization and management; document preparation; docket control and other relevant management topics. Administrative skills such as leadership, communication, delegation and personnel issues will be addressed, and typical law office situations will be presented for analysis. This course is offered as an alternative to PAR 199, the Paralegal Internship, and only one of these courses may be taken for program credit.
