Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

What is MCC’s Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Community?

Scholarly inquiry and professional development are at the heart of effective teaching and student support. Faculty and staff need the opportunity to reflect upon and analyze their practice to ensure they are meeting the needs of an ever-evolving educational landscape. SoTL provides the platform for educators and student support professionals to frame scholarly inquiry in light of existing research, collaborate with faculty and staff, and create their own body of knowledge. Encouraging creativity and innovative thinking, SoTL promotes an equity-minded culture of persistence and student success.

The MCC SoTL program:

  • Partners with students to elicit their perspectives and support their intellectual growth

  • Cultivates connections between faculty and staff throughout the college, promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration

  • Provides professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, including during all-college professional days

  • Breaks down silos by introducing faculty and staff to college resources, support services and to one another

  • Provides opportunities for faculty and staff to learn from scholars and industry specialists

  • Prompts individual and collective faculty action research projects that impact student success

  • Connects faculty to resources to engage in their own SoTL work

  • Advocates for the use of scholarship in teaching and learning

  • Welcomes part and full-time faculty, staff, administrators, and students to join our community
