8 College for Kids Collegefor Kids 2018 Summer Programs for Ages 8 to 16 July 9 - August 16 Middlesex Community College’s College for Kids provides children with an exciting range of unique opportunities to explore careers, gain new knowledge, develop new skills, meet new friends, and boost self-confidence. Our programs provide students with a safe and exciting place to learn on the Bedford and Lowell campuses using the vast open spaces in Bedford and the cultural and ethnic resources in Lowell. Please note the recommended ages of each program carefully when registering your child and that all programs, with the exception of the MCC Children’s Theater run Monday-Thursday. The prices listed below include materials and activities although some require additional fees for special field trips or supplies. This information is noted in the description. Pay close attention to the start times and end times, as they vary from half-day to full-day. Middlesex strives to employ either public school teachers or experts in the field. In Aviation and Simulation, you will explore many of the possible aviation careers and meet experts from those fields. Learn the fundamentals of flight by designing, building, and testing your own model aircraft and rockets. On field trips, you will witness airport operations first-hand and learn more about what it takes to have “the right stuff.” For an additional, fee of approximately $60 your child will have the option to take an instructional flight; weather dependent. Details provided the first day of class. YTH 610 30 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. BEDFORD $363 From pavement to paper, we will approach the writing process via daily adventures and experiences. This odyssey will entail surveying several forms of writing and producing a portfolio as a memento of your daily activities. Students will gain a stronger grasp of grammar concepts, creative writing techniques, and essay format. Confident and emerging writers with a sense of adventure and a love of learning new things are encouraged to attend. All activities included in the cost. ALL ABOUT SCIENCE! (Ages 8-11) Experiments? Rockets? Cool chemical reactions? Animal Care? Forensics? Geology? Come to All About Science for a medley of fun activities. Learn how science works in the real world. A portion will involve children overcoming challenges the instructor presents to the group. Maybe simple machines, maybe catapults, maybe fingerprint identification. You never know what you will discover in All About Science! YTH 639 30 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. BEDFORD $312 Students will learn about four different Master Artists in history. We will explore what their style is like. Then we will paint a painting in the style of that Master Artist. The materials we will use will be acrylic paints on canvas. Each student will complete at least four paintings in the style of four different artists. This class will both help students recognize differences between styles of artists and help them to create their own style. We will discuss illustration styles and tips and tricks used by professionals in the industry. Facial expressions, figure drawing, composition, perspective and background will also be covered.
