Web Design Certificate
This Certificate program delves into the basic design theory, planning,deployment,
and ongoing development of a website using WordPress or other blogging and
content management systems. Basic understanding of Windows and the internet
are prerequisites. WordPress will be used for all courses. To earn a certificate
in web design, candidates must complete the following five courses: Up and Running on the
Web, Scripting Languages for the Web, Designing for the Web, Maintenance and Security for
Web Servers,and Advanced Topics for the Web. This is also the preferred order for courses

Instructor Bio: Greg Fishbone has been designing and maintaining websites for individuals,
companies, and organizations for over 20 years, a period that has seen web technology
develop from a computer lab accessory to the backbone of our modern economy and central
player in our daily lives. Greg serves as principal designer at Groton Pixel Web Design.
Up and Running on the Web
Create a blog or website using a popular blogging platform or content
management system. Students will become proficient in online account
management, dashboard usage, content creation, media library maintenance,
and video embedding. At the end of the course, keep your site online and have
all the tools necessary to be your own webmaster! No prior knowledge of HTML is required.

TEC 653 Scripting Languages for the Web
An introduction to the most common scripting languages of the web: HTML
tags that tell a browser program how to render a page; CSS style instructions
that control the way page elements look; JavaScript code that can be used to
run programs within a web page; and PHP, a server-side scripting language that generates
dynamic HTML and CSS code. Students will learn how these scripting languages interact to
create web pages, and specific applications of each scripting language to WordPress and
other blogging and content management systems. (16 hours)
TEC 654 Designing for the Web
An introduction to theories of user experience design and user interface design,
together allowing the creation of websites that are more accessible, easier to
use, more pleasant to look at, and more appropriate to their content and purpose.
Students will learn how to use color, fonts, icons, and images effectively, how to
optimize navigation options, how to design for different screen sizes, and how to overcome
accessibility challenges. This course will provide tools and techniques for implementing these
changes on WordPress and other blogging and content management systems. (16 hours)
TEC 655 Maintenance & Security for Web Servers
Students will learn how to set up an account on a hosted server, install local
instances of WordPress and other applications, create and restore backups,
work with a MySQL database, plug up security holes, and recover from malicious
attacks. (16 hours)
TEC 656 Advanced Topics for the Web
How do search engines like Google and Bing see your website, and how can
you achieve a higher rank that will allow users to more easily find your site?
How can you sell products or services through your website and process online
payments? How can you include photo galleries, web-based forms, or portfolios into your
website? How can you turn your website into a specialized social network? This course will
explore ways to optimize your website and add new applications. (16 hours)
Microsoft Web Developer. Course # GES 314
Gain the Web development skills that can put you ahead of your competition! In this program,
you will learn how to develop Web pages using .NET Framework 4.0. Upon completion you'll be
equipped with the knowledge you will need to take the Microsoft 70-515 exam and become a fully
proficient Microsoft Web Developer. Skills you will master in this program include installing and
using Visual Studio 2010, using web developer express, and debugging code. You'll also explore
HTML concepts, elements and tags, attributes, hyperlinks and anchors, image management,
XML, CSS, .NET programming, ASP.NET, JQuery, AJAX, ASP .NET Web Applications, and .NET
Framework 4.0. You will also have the opportunity to practice online lab systems. (240 hours).

Learn how to create an interactive Web site, allowing visitors to post and retrieve information
provided by you or your site's visitors. Learn how to create dynamic Web pages using the PHP
programming language and the MySQL database server. You'll walk through the development
of a complete content management system Web application. You'll receive clear, step-by-
step, instructions demonstrating how to create a complete Web site capable of dynamically
displaying data from a MySQL database. Discover how you can allow your site's visitors to
add new information to an online database, search through posted data, and create meaningful

This programming language lets you add interactivity to your webpages by creating features
such as buttons, picture carousels, and collapsible panels. You'll learn how to define what
happens when an end user clicks a button or presses a key on your pages, and see how
JavaScript enables your pages to make "if . . . then . . . else" decisions about what to do based on
circumstances. You'll also get a chance to try out loops and timers to create animation effects.
By the end of the course, you'll understand how to use jQuery to catapult your basic JavaScript
knowledge. This course assumes students are proficient with HTML and CSS. ONLINE COURSE.

Computer Applications
PC Security Fundamentals
In this course you will learn how to use your computer and related devices in
a secure manner while safeguarding your privacy. Learn how to dramatically
lessen your chances of credit card fraud, hacking, identity theft, virus's and
related dangers. As well as how and why your online activities are tracked and analyzed. You
will become aware of strategies for managing your Internet connection, web browsing, email,
chatting, social media, and file sharing. This course will cover how to download and upload
files safely with an emphasis on avoiding downloads containing possible viruses. Learn how to
create strong passwords in order to better protect your online activities. This course will cover
how to clear your browsing history, clear cookies and online forms, Recycle Bin, Spam folder,
and Trash folder as well as what happens to your deleted files. Many of the topics that will be
covered apply across the various platforms but this course's primary focus will be the Windows
platform. It will cover computers, tablets, cell phones, and removable drives. (15 Hours) $249

Practical Computers - An Intro to PC's and Windows This course is an introduction to the
computer and computer applications via lecture and hands-on activities. We start with an
overview of computer hardware, software, and networks that includes the use of Microsoft
Windows for running programs, the creation of folders, and file management. We continue
with a focus on Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Powerpoint, Email, and the Internet.
