MINIMUM TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS FOR DISTANCE LEARNING

When participating in distance education courses, it is vital to consider the technology needed in order to have a successful course. We recommend a computer with a reliable internet connection that is fast enough to handle the types of material you will need to view in your class. This may include large video files that will not work on slower internet connections or older computers. You will need a high-speed internet connection such as cable or DSL modem. The faster the internet connection - the better your online experience will be (a dial-up or satellite internet connection is not recommended).

For some classes, additional software may be required as specified by the instructor.

Required Hardware

  • A computer (desktop/laptop) or mobile device (tablet) that is less than 5 years old.
  • Speakers/headphones/earbuds for listening to audio or videos presented in courses is helpful.

Minimum Requirements

  • Operating System: Windows 7 or newer; Mac OS 10.6 or newer
  • Processor: 2 GHz or faster
  • RAM: 3 GB of RAM
  • Screen resolution: 1024 x 768 or higher
  • Internet connection: Broadband internet connection
    • If you are using a satellite internet provider, you may experience timeouts, IP address issues, session problems, or course mail issues caused by latency. Please try to use a different provider when accessing Blackboard Learn.

Recommended Browsers and Software

For best performance, use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. To verify that your browser has all required plugins, use Blackboard's browser checker.  This is also on the Blackboard institution page.

Plug-ins and additional software
