Why should I quit smoking?


Your Health:

Quitting smoking is hard work but the benefits are worth it. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. In the U.S. alone, smoking is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths, and approximately 8.6 million people suffer from smoking-related lung and heart diseases.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that adult male smokers lost an average of 13.2 years of life and female smokers lost 14.5 years of life because of smoking.

The Health of Others: 

Smoking not only harms your health, but the health of those around you. Secondhand smoke includes exhaled smoke as well as smoke from burning cigarettes. Studies have shown that secondhand smoke causes thousands of deaths each year from lung cancer in healthy non-smokers. 

The Cost: 

Smoking is expensive. Cigarettes cost approximately $9 a pack so as soon as you quit you will save money. Calculate how much you spend on smoking by multiplying the amount of money you spend on tobacco every day by 365, then multiply that number by the number of years you have been using tobacco. These numbers may shock you. Think about it: what would you rather do with that much money? You will also save on other costs, such as higher health care costs due to tobacco-related problems, and higher health and life insurance rates.

Quitting smoking offers some benefits you'll notice right away: 

  • Your hair and breath will smell better
  • Your teeth and nails will stop yellowing
  • Food will taste better
  • Your sense of smell will improve
  • Everyday activities (like climbing stairs or going for a walk) will no longer leave you out of breath
  • You could save about $3,350 a year 

I've been smoking for years, can I really quit? 

Yes you can! It’s never too late to quit using tobacco. No matter how old you are or how long you've smoked, quitting can help you live longer and be healthier – but it is not always easy. Most people try many times to quit before they stop for good. There are multiple methods for quitting and many people use a combination of them.

MCC offers resources, support and education to help you quit through the Center for Health & Wellness. There are also many great online resources from the American Cancer Society, The American Lung Association, and Make Smoking History.
