PHL 101- Introduction to Philosophy

  • Identify several movements and traditions of philosophy, from the Presocratics to contemporary thinkers.
  • Differentiate the major branches of philosophy (e.g., aesthetics, ethics, epistemology, logic, metaphysics, politics) and their respective methodologies.
  • Analyze arguments through close, critical reading
  • Construct effectivearguments via written and oral discourse.

PHL 108- Applied Ethics in Dental Hygiene

  • Analyze ethical dilemmas in DH practice, by evaluating ethical theory and the Dental Hygiene Code of Ethics as they apply to decision making.
  • Evaluate the intent of professional codes of ethics with respect to the law.
  • Apply ethical decision-making frameworks to resolve ethical dilemmas encountered in practice.
  • Defend ethically informed decisions and how such decisions support respect for patients and the profession.
  • Advocate for professional advancement to support the changing oral health needs of the public.

PHL 299- Postcolonial and Diaspora Studies: Honors Seminar

  • Critically examine interconnections and functions of postcolonial literature and its contexts, including comparative and interdisciplinary issues.
  • Develop a clear understanding of the relations and interdependence between different kinds of racialization, indigenous cultural politics, colonial dynamics, and/or diasporic formations.
  • Develop an understanding of intersectional and critical approaches to the study of social power
  • Develop an understanding of and appreciation for the cultural expression, worldviews, or political movements of racial, ethnic, or indigenous groups or communities
  • Practice the use of interdisciplinary methods, and conduct original research
  • Develop an awareness of methodological rigor, and develop strong skills in research and writing.
