MAS 106- Administrative Medical Assisting (formerly MAS 102)

  • Apply knowledge of the profession and applicable legal and ethical standards to the practice of Medical Assisting.
  • Demonstrate common procedures and practices in the medical front office.
  • Manage the medical office schedule.
  • Locate appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes related to the patient’s office visit.
  • Differentiate between the different health insurances.

MAS 107- Basic Clinical Skills (formerly MAS 103)

  • Apply therapeutic communication with patients across the lifespan
  • Integrate OSHA’s requirement for a site-based Exposure Control Plan into office management procedures.
  • Develop an appropriate and effective patient-teaching plan.
  • Assist with the basic physical examination in both adult and pediatric patients, including obtaining a complete medical history and basic patient assessments.
  • Perform routine clinical office procedures using correct techniques.
  • Apply knowledge of basic nutrition to reading food labels and explaining therapeutic diets to patients.
  • Develop an environmental, personal (patient and employee) safety, and evacuation plan for a physician office.

MAS 108- Pharmacology for Medical Assistants

  • Demonstrate accurate conversions among measurement systems
  • Apply mathematical computations to solve dosage calculations equations
  • Differentiate between the types of names that are assigned to a drug
  • List the various classifications of drugs based on their action within the body
  • Identity common routes and methods of drug administration

MAS 109- Medical Care in Health & Disease (formerly MAS 120)

  • Identify major contributions to the advancement of medical knowledge.
  • Describe the scientific method used in medical research, including the factors which Western medicine requires to be considered valid research.
  • Correlate knowledge of the scientific method, statistics and scientific discoveries to the study of infectious disease.
  • Compare the traditions of Latino and Chinese medical systems with the Western scientific health care system in relation to beliefs, diagnosis, treatment and training of healthcare professionals.
  • Examine the effect of culture on medical beliefs and response to treatment.
  • Describe the medical assistant’s role in the diagnosis and treatment of selected conditions.

MAS 121- Clinical Laboratory Techniques

  • Perform routine CLIA waived patient screening tests using established protocols.

MAS 122- Advanced Clinical Assisting Procedures

  • Explain the role of the medical assistant in assisting with various types of surgical and diagnostic imaging procedures.
  • Select appropriate adaptive devices used to help patients to ambulate.
  • Identify appropriate first aid and emergency responses for various medical emergencies.
  • Solve dosage calculation equations.
  • Describe safety precautions related to medication administration, including the medical assistant's role in IV therapy.

MAS 123- Electronic Health Records (formerly MAS 105)

  • Explain the purpose, format, and uses of an electronic health record (EHR).
  • Discuss key issues related to privacy and security of EHRs.
  • Set up and edit patient and insurance information in the EHR.
  • Use the EHR to add information to the schedule and create office visit notes.
  • Describe how to order lab, imaging and medical tests.
  • Create documents using industry acceptable formatting.

MAS 150- Medical Assisting Seminar

  • Apply administrative and clinical knowledge of medical assisting gained through the program to current medical assisting practice.
  • Describe the ethical and professional role of medical assistants, including the legal scope and limitations of practice
  • Develop strategies to prepare for the national certification exam, including time management, study skills, and test-taking techniques.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of content and competencies in the medical assisting program through the successful completion of practice certification exam questions.
  • Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior in all communications and performance of class requirements as specified in the Medical Assisting Student Handbook.

MAS 151- Medical Assisting Externship (formerly MAS 201)

  • Apply previously learned cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills in the performance of medical office administrative and clinical competencies.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and interactive skills with patients, colleagues and other professionals.
  • Provide effective patient teaching.
  • Apply appropriate legal and ethical standards in the practice of medical assisting.
