DHY 103- Head and Neck Anatomy

  • Identify intraoral and extraoral landmarks of the head and neck.
  • Explain the anatomy, structure and function of the head and neck.
  • Identify the muscles of the head and neck with emphasis on their functions and conditions of dysfunction.
  • Apply theoretical knowledge of head and neck anatomy to direct patient care by means of assessment, treatment planning and delivery of services.

DHY 104- Oral Anatomy, Histology and Embryology

  • Define dental terminology related to the oral cavity and teeth.
  • Explain cells and basic tissue components.
  • Identify the embryonic development of the face and oral cavity.
  • Relate the eruption and morphology of the primary and permanent human dentition into the dental hygiene process of care.

DHY 105- Nutrition

  • Explain the way the body digests, absorbs, transports, and metabolizes nutrients.
  • Explain the role nutrients and principles of food safety play in maintaining health and preventing disease.
  • Identify extraoral and intraoral signs of nutritional deficiencies and eating disorders.
  • Discern the interrelationship of diet, exercise, and weight control at the different stages of life.
  • Analyze an individual's diet and provide recommendations for diet modifications in order to achieve an ideal nutritional consumption

DHY 150- Concepts in Dental Hygiene II

  • Use terminology related to medically compromised patient populations.

  • Apply foundational knowledge of the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms of common and potential medical emergencies in the dental setting.

DHY 152- Dental Radiology

  • Explain the principles and effects of radiation.
  • Describe the physics and characteristics associated with production of x-rays.
  • Employ regulatory agency guidelines for patient and operator protection.
  • Demonstrate the various dental radiographic technique procedures.
  • Interpret errors associated with radiographic images.

DHY 153- Periodontology

  • Assess a patient's risk factors, risk indicators, and contributory factors for periodontal disease.
  • Summarize etiology, role of the host response, and the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.
  • Diagnosis a patient's periodontal condition based on health history, clinical features, and microbiological.
  • Create dental hygiene treatment plan for a patient with periodontal disease.
  • Predict expected outcomes, contraindications and risks associated with surgical and non-surgical periodontal treatment options using evidence based principles

DHY 200- Concepts in Dental Hygiene III

  • Evaluate factors used to support patient adherence to disease prevention and/or health maintenance strategies.
  • Provide dental hygiene care to promote community and patient health and wellness using critical thinking and problem solving according to accepted standards of care.
  • Use evidence-based decision making to evaluate and incorporate emerging treatment modalities to diverse populations.

DHY 201- Dental Hygiene Clinical Practice III

DHY 202- Oral Pathology

  • Recognize diseases, conditions and other deviations from normal affecting the oral cavity and head & neck region.
  • Determine the etiology, pathogenesis and prognosis for pathologic conditions affecting the oral cavity and head & neck region.
  • Create a differential dental hygiene diagnosis when observing diseases, conditions and other deviations from normal affecting the oral cavity and head & neck region.
  • Determine appropriate referrals, care planning and health promotion strategies based on abnormal findings.

DHY 203- Pharmacology

  • Describe the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics for each classification of drugs.
  • Plan safe treatment by identifying possible interactions and necessary treatment modifications.
  • Work collaboratively with peers and faculty with class and online case studies.
  • Assess a variety of drug reference sources to make recommendations of applicable drug information.

DHY 204- Dental Materials

  • Identify the federal, state and professional agencies and organization that create the standards for the development, manufacture, safety and use of dental materials.
  • Discuss the theory, composition and use of preventive, restorative, prosthetic and specialty dental materials.
  • Distinguish the difference of dental materials as reflected in their radiographic appearance.
  • Evaluate various commercial dental materials and products through peer reviewed journals, and extrapolate their safety and efficacy for patient home use.
  • Demonstrate use of a selection of dental materials on a student partner and in a laboratory setting.

DHY 251- Dental Hygiene Clinical Practice IV

DHY 253- Local Anesthesia

  • Identify anatomical considerations related to the administration of local anesthesia.
  • Demonstrate proper techniques and safety measures when administering local anesthesia.
  • Apply appropriate action steps in potential local anesthetic emergencies.
