DAS 101- Dental Science I

  • Utilize dental anatomical terms to identify head and neck structures.
  • Differentiate between normal and variation of normalcy in the appearance and development of oral and dental structures.
  • Identify sites for application of topical anesthesia.
  • List the fundamental concepts in head and neck manipulation, occlusal record and orthodontic diagnosis.

DAS 102- Dental Assisting

  • Assist in restorative procedures, surgical procedures, and a variety of dental specialty procedures, using the Principles of Four-Handed Dentistry.
  • Prepare instrument tray set-ups and the dental materials needed for each dental procedure.
  • Apply critical thinking skills to be able to anticipate the "next" step while assisting in a dental procedure.
  • Demonstrate professional communication when discussing the procedures and conversing with other dental professionals.
  • Abide by ethical and HIPAA Standards when caring for a patient.
  • Maintain infection control protocols during all aspects of assisting.

DAS 103- Dental Materials & Procedure

  • Apply their knowledge of the physical, chemical properties and biological considerations of commonly used dental materials during selection, preparation and placement of those materials in the clinical and laboratory settings.
  • Demonstrate infection control and safety practices in dealing with dental materials and proficiency in utilization and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of current dental technologies and legitimate dental technology resources.
  • Utilize safety data sheets and technical manuals of materials to maintain the minimum standards of dental materials set by regulatory agencies.

DAS 104- Pre-Clinical Dental Assisting

  • Demonstrate proper infection control techniques and protocols before, during, and after all dental procedures including handling of biohazards, treating of dental waterlines, and cleaning and sterilization procedures.
  • Prepare applicable instrument tray set-ups and handle dental materials as appropriate for each dental procedure.
  • Demonstrate basic four-handed dentistry assisting skills for patient, assistant and operator comfort during dental operative procedures.
  • Demonstrate skills while using typodonts and simulation equipment.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and ethical decision making at all times in the clinic and lab.

DAS 105- Concepts in Risk Management

  • Review medical histories for completeness, highlighting medical conditions or medications that may adversely affect the outcome of dental treatment.
  • Practice preventive measures to avoid health and safety hazards.
  • Follow regulated standard protocols when encountering accidental exposures in the dental setting.
  • Recognize early signs of distress and assist in responding to medical emergencies during dental procedures.

DAS 150- Clinical Practicum

  • Review medical histories for completeness, highlighting medical conditions or medications that may adversely affect the outcome of dental treatment.
  • Practice preventive measures to avoid health and safety hazards.
  • Follow regulated standard protocols when encountering accidental exposures in the dental setting.

DAS 151- Dental Science II

  • Describe the characteristics of common diseases and syndromes that afflict the head and neck area.
  • List the basic principles of diseases and their manifestation in specific organ systems.
  • Apply the knowledge of microorganisms towards infection control protocols and limiting disease transmission.
  • Apply understanding of the pathophysiology of the organ systems to assist in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment procedures.
  • Facilitate treatment scheduling and management of the conditions with understanding of the sequela and treatment processes of oral diseases and disorders.

DAS 152- Dental Practice Management

  • Operate business equipment including computer and dental software programs to promote efficiency.
  • Explain the terms ethics, jurisprudence, civil law and criminal law, the duties of the State Board of Dental Examiners, and the State Practice Act.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients, employers and colleagues.
  • Perform inventory management and equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain Quality Business records.
  • Manage electronic, paper and hybrid patient information; including developing retention policies in compliance with State and Federal guidelines.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with scheduling appointments and recare systems.

DAS 153- Preventive Dentistry

  • Assist in preventive procedures.
  • Provide oral hygiene instruction.
  • Perform the expanded functions of coronal polishing, fluoride application, and sealant application.
  • Develop and deliver a nutritional preventive plan.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients, fellow classmates, and faculty.
  • Present to elementary school children a presentation on oral hygiene care and basic nutrition to help prevent caries and gingival inflammation.
