lexander Gounaris, the 2016-17 student member of the MCC
Board of Trustees, has a mission: increase student engagement.
In an official capacity, the Student Trustee represents the
student voice and serves as a liaison between the student body and
the administration. However, Gounaris' ambitions extend beyond
simple communication.
"I see a lot of students who just filter in and filter out and don't
get involved on campus. I want those students to look around and
recognize all Middlesex has to offer," he said.
Gounaris, originally from Westford, finds inspiration from the people
around him. "I wake up everyday thinking about who I'll see and
interact with that day. I really believe that your relationships with
other people can be your greatest asset."
His passion for people is something he discovered when he attended
Bridgewater State University after graduating from high school.
"Bridgewater introduced me to so many new and different people
and cultures," he said. "It really made me think if I can encounter
people who think totally differently from me, who live just 20 or 30
miles away, what will I encounter 2,000 miles away, or on the other
side of the globe? Through these encounters, I found perspective and
passion."
But Gounaris' academic journey was just beginning. After shifting
his academic direction, he enrolled at Cape Cod Community
College. While there, his passion for people led Gounaris to explore
journalism, working for a student-run newspaper. "I really liked
talking to people and telling their stories," he said. "You can learn so
much about yourself from other people.
"But as much as I liked reporting, I realized I wanted to be the one
being interviewed," he said. "I wanted microphones in my face,
talking to people fighting for people. That's when I realized that I
wanted to dedicate my life to people. My goal is to work in human
rights law."
To achieve his career goals, Gounaris decided to return to Westford
where he could be closer to a hub of culture and politics. This led him
to Middlesex, where he has found success.
"I applied myself and got really serious about my education," he said.
And he got involved on campus.
Gounaris currently serves as an officer in MCC's Student Union
Government Association (SUGA). He is also a member of the Dean's
Advisory Counsel.
"I know from experience getting involved on campus can help you
succeed. It makes everything you're learning in class more real,"
he said. "For example, when I'm at a SUGA meeting and voice my
opinion and people respond and we take action that creates change
it makes you feel like you can do anything.
"I want everyone to be engaged with the school and have the
opportunity to reach their potential. I want to help fellow students
find their talent, find their passion and be in their element
like I have."

As the student member of the MCC Board of Trustees, Alexander Gounaris hopes to inspire other students
to become actively engaged in the college community.
