"The structure of each seminar is the same," he said. "There is an
80-minute lecture, then a review period, and we always end with a
group exercise." AHP students are required to take at least three
Career Readiness Seminars. However, they have become so popular,
the seminars have been opened up to students enrolled in all
Health Careers programs.
Everyone who completes a seminar receives a certificate of completion,
which helps AHP students build their resumes and e-portfolios, LaRoche
added. "When our students go out and market themselves, they can
now show they have all these other skills.
"They not only know how to draw blood and do billing, they also have
been trained in conflict resolution, they understand the importance of
team building, and know how to be culturally sensitive when working
with patients from different backgrounds. It's an added benefit,"
said LaRoche.
"These are things we don't include in our academic curriculum, but they
are pieces our students need to know," Garrow-Pruitt added. "We want
our students to stand out."
