General (Secure) Wireless Access
(Login – short version)

PREREQUISTES

·         Windows XP Professional (with latest patches)

·         Wireless 802.11a, b, or g

·         Valid network login ID (username/pw)

·         Wireless Access – General Initial Setup has been run

OVERVIEW

For secure, encrypted access to the Internet and Middlesex CC network resources

PRE-CHECKS

1.      Network cables/cards disconnected

2.      Laptop is booted

3.      Wireless card inserted

WIRELESS LOGIN

Assumes MCC_GENERAL is on Preferred networks list from General Initial Setup (see separate document)

Wait 1 minute or until balloon message appears.  If msg appears start at step 5; if msg doesn’t appear start at step 1

1.      Right-click Networking Icon in system tray of desktop window

2.      Select Open Network Connections

Network Connections window opens

3.      Select Wireless Network Connection [number] entry

Status of the connection display in Details section to the left

4.      Double-click Wireless Network Connection [number] entry

Laptop attempts to connect to the first network in your Preferred networks list

5.      If this is the first secure wireless login for this account on this laptop (or password changed): a balloon msg appears asking you to “Click here to…”

§         Click balloon msg

§         Enter username/pw (leave domain blank) on Enter Credentials window

§         Click OK

As a result of either step 4 or step 5, a balloon message appears

1.      If balloon msg says, “Connected to MCC_GENERAL…” indicates a successful connection to wireless access point, continue to next step

2.      Open a browser

3.      If Security Alert(s) appear, click OK or Yes

4.      Enter network login ID (username/pw)

5.      Click Log In or press Enter key

Blue socket message and your homepage display

6.      Minimize bluesocket box (do NOT close!)

You are successfully logged in!

END WIRELESS SESSION

1.      Maximize bluesocket box

2.      Click Click to Logout

Wireless Session is terminated
