Job Interview Tips

You should:

  • Dress appropriately.
  • Show up on time (i.e. 5-10 minutes early)
  • Conduct yourself in a professional manner.
  • Stay positive, speak in a clear and confident voice, look people in the eye
  • Be polite and courteous to all staff and visitors
  • Provide accurate information regarding your skills, past work experience, availability and professional references (if requested)
  • If you cannot make it to your scheduled interview due to an emergency, call to apologize and reschedule in advance or as soon as possible.
Questions you may be asked in an interview:

  • Tell me about yourself
  • Why are you interested in this position?
  • What skills or experience do you have that will help you be successful here?
  • What is your schedule availability?

Supervisors typically address the following topics during a student job interview:

  • Job responsibilities
  • Pay rate
  • Job requirements (skill set, experience, etc.)
  • Necessary training
  • Start date and length of employment
  • Required time commitment and available schedule

By the end of the interview, you should know:

  • The job responsibilities
  • The pay rate
  • The type and length of training required
  • Your potential work schedule for the current semester
  • Your start date and length of employment
