First Year Champions
The positive impact of peer mentors is well documented in higher-education research. At Middlesex, these student leaders, called First Year Champions, are experienced and successful students who work collaboratively with instructors in the First-year General Education Seminars to offer a component to the course which we hope will ultimately lead to strong positive relationships between new students and peer role models - empowering students to help each other.
First Year Champions demonstrate by example that student success is within reach. They offer assistance
to the instructor and to the students, serve as academic coach and resource for campus
information. Meanwhile their goal is to inspire the values and abilities Middlesex
aims to foster in each student. These include academic integrity, student success
skills, responsible decision making, and a balanced, engaged college experience.
Each mentor is trained to help students in their first 30 credits make the transition
to college life and be successful at MCC.
