The Use of Media Can Enhance Students' Intrinsic Motivation

The goal of this project was to determine the efficacy of using media to teach traditional literary concepts to students by enhancing their intrinsic motivation. I designed a course entitled Family Matters in Literature, Television, and Advertising that examines the recurring portrayals of stereotypical images of the family. The research attempts to answer three questions: Is Media Literacy worth teaching to community college students? Can the use of media enhance students' intrinsic motivation? And, can a project this small, by tapping into existing research, form any valuable conclusions that can be shared and/or reviewed by peers that may be struggling with similar questions?
