Frequent Asked Questions

What is PTK?

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of Two Year Colleges. The Middlesex Chapter, Alpha Delta Omicron inducts members every semester.

Who at MCC is eligible to join PTK?

All Middlesex Community College students who have earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have completed at least 12 college level credits in a Degree Program at MCC.

How do I find out if I am eligible?

All eligible students receive an invitation letter mailed to their home address or emailed to their MCC email.

Does it cost money to become a member?

The membership fee for joining Phi Theta Kappa is $65.00. This one-time fee covers the cost of national and regional membership dues. If you are eligible and would like to join the honor society, but are unable to pay the membership fee, please complete the waiver form along with your application. Phi Theta Kappa is a smart investment; its members have access to more than $37 million in scholarships, a benefit unmatched by other honor societies.

What are the benefits of being a PTK member?

Phi Theta Kappa membership guarantees you access to more benefits than any other student organization. As a member, your academic excellence will be recognized with the Golden Key Membership Pin, membership certificate, and identification card; notation of membership on your diploma and transcript; and the privilege of wearing the Phi Theta Kappa gold stole at graduation.

Membership also includes an array of benefits designed to help you grow as a scholar and leader. Our local chapter allows you to network with a group of scholars on campus and hone critical leadership and business skills such as researching real-life issues in your community; working on a team to plan ways to impact or resolve those issues; learning to effectively communicate and collaborate with fellow students, faculty, administration, and local businesses to improve the community; and learning to negotiate conflicts in a positive way through our Honors in Action program.

If I am a member, how can I get more involved?

Your participation in PTK activities is limitless. MCC's PTK chapter is an active student group that meets throughout the year. If you would like to be involved in PTK and are not sure how, please contact one of the PTK officers or advisors. We would love to hear from you!

What does a Phi Theta Kappa Emblem look like and what does it mean?

Photo of PTK pinPhoto of PTK pinThe emblem of this society is a golden slab. The center of the slab is a black band upon which three Greek letters appear: Phi Theta Kappa. These letters symbolize the Greek words for wisdom, aspiration, and purity. The wreath of oak leaves denotes stability and strength of character. The curling leaves of laurel signify achievement and success. Above the band is a representation of the head of Athena, Goddess of Learning. In the base appear the mystic Greek letters meaning light.
