Going Green without Breaking the Bank: One Path to Paper-Free SI – LC101

Learn how our SI program quit the paper habit for the cost of a dozen flash drives while decreasing our workload and increasing the accuracy of our record keeping.

Having challenges with faculty engagement in your SI program? As two faculty heavily invested in SI program development, we will discuss commonly reported faculty concerns. We will present on our own journey as a case study to help SI coordinators engage faculty in an SI program to improve student learning. 

 

Meta-Talks: Revitalizing Test Preparation in STEM Courses through Peer-Guided Reflection - LC112

After an SI Leader analyzed how her biology students prepared for unsatisfactory exams, she guided reflections in which students "talked" to each other through their data and ultimately revised approaches to tests. Participants in this interactive workshop will gain tools for training SI Leaders to guide compelling metacognitive reflection based on accessible data.

This research identifies the essential difficulties of student participation in supplemental instruction, and equips attendees with tangible strategies to improve interactive communication and engagement. USJ's chemistry faculty and support service staff will discuss the collaborative effort that led to a Workshop Manual which corresponds to weekly class material from a first semester freshmen chemistry course identified as a gateway course for retention. The positive data/feedback from structured weekly workshops, utilizing this manual, facilitated by student tutors who had excelled in the course with that specific professor, understanding his focus and method of teaching the concepts.

What does it take to build a thriving SI Community? Who are the key stakeholders? In this interactive workshop, a science professor and an SI Staff member will share their perspectives on the benefits of working together to build and sustain a quality SI program.  We will share the tools and strategies we have developed that optimize the success of our program that include our recruitment process, faculty onboarding and application, communication tips, and the ongoing mentoring & support of our Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders.  Our goal is for participants to walk away with concrete ideas on how to strengthen their SI program.
