Diversity Summit

The Diversity Summit
is an Interdisciplinary Studies one-credit course that brings students together across race, ethnicity, gender, religion, nationality, socio-economic status, ability, and sexual orientation to engage in an honest, open, and interactive dialogue.

Students will travel to Ogunquit, Maine for a series of workshops, and discussions centered on issues of culture, identity and social justice. The summit is held from Tuesday, March 21 to Thursday, March 23, 2023, during March break.The total cost is $50 and includes course tuition, transportation, accommodations and all meals.

Complete the online form and attach an application essay. Be sure to answer all the questions in an essay format with no more than two typed pages. Application submission does not guarantee a seat in the class.

As part of the one credit IDS course, accepted students are required to participate in all workshops during the Diversity Summit, attend an orientation meeting before the trip and participate in a student showcase after the trip. Orientation meeting and academic preparation will be held on Friday, March 10 from 12:30pm to 3:00pm.

Digital applications are encouraged. Students may also print the PDF form to submit a hard-copy of the application. Hard-copies can be dropped off at the Multicultural Center, Lowell Campus, Cowan Center, Ground Floor, G02.

Required Essay Questions

Please respond to all five questions in an essay format of not more than two typed pages. These questions do not necessarily need to be answered in order, as long as the answers are covered in the essay.

1. Describe yourself, including what you have done prior to attending Middlesex, what responsibilities and/or interests you have outside the classroom environment, and what are your future goals after you complete your studies at Middlesex.

2. How would you describe your personality? Give some examples to demonstrate your personal attributes?

3. Why is this program of interest to you?

4. What does diversity and inclusion mean to you? Give some examples.

5. Each of us brings a unique perspective based on your own background and life experiences. What perspective can you bring to conversations around diversity and inclusion?
