Social Justice in Action Conference

MCC's mission statement clearly promotes a diverse and inclusive campus community. The goal of the first Social Justice in Action Conference is to mobilize students to be innovative in creating and sustaining more inclusive campus communities. As a result of participating in the conference, students will gain the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to enhance their development as a proactive leader. We hope to assist students with understanding the meaning and scope of social justice by

  • deepening their understanding of the dynamics of privilege and oppression at the individual, group, cultural, and systems levels
  • identify ways students can engage in promoting social justice and equity on campus and their respective communities
  • explain how values of citizen leadership promote social justice
  • engage in meaningful dialogue with a variety of educators and students who are similarly committed to equity

The Social Justice in Action Conference is a one day conference and will be held at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center featuring, a series of workshops and sessions utilizing a host of different formats, including presentations, roundtables, and other interactive arrangements to promote collaboration and information-sharing among students. A diverse group of up to thirty students will be selected to participate in the program. Local community members will engage students in a conversation about activist movements and encourage attendees to advance their understanding of social justice models. At the conclusion of the conference, different student groups led by student leaders will each develop an action plan to promote social justice issues within the MCC and surrounding communities. The students will present their projects in the spring semester during the first annual “Social Justice Day” at MCC on Wednesday March 1, 2017.
