Carrie Salazar, Information Literacy/Assessment Library
I grew up in Miami, Florida in a Cuban American family. When I was in high school
my family fell on hard times, both illness and financially. I went to Miami Dade Community
College to stay close to my family and received my Associates of Arts while I worked
to save up money to transfer. I was able to transfer to the University of Florida
and received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History. A few years later while working at
the University of Florida, I went back to school and got a Master of Library Science
degree.
Looking back at my undergraduate experience, it was not easy. I felt it was a nonstop four years of stress, uncertainty, and doubt. When I decided to move to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida, I didn’t feel welcomed. I didn’t understand the southern culture and found it difficult to connect with my peers. It wasn’t until my last semester that I finally felt at ease and comfortable. I found a good group of friends and connected with the Gainesville community in my own way.
