MCC Recycling Initiative

Mission:

It is our goal to be as environmentally responsible as possible. An estimated two thirds of our refuse is recyclable paper and cardboard. The disposal of this material is costing the college tens of thousands of dollars annually. Therefore, we are instituting a comprehensive paper and cardboard recycling program. The success of this program requires participation and effort from every student and employee at both campuses.

Our plan is to have containers for all recyclable paper at each workstation, classroom or desk and centralized collection areas in each building or on each floor as needed. Paper will be recycled as office mix so no sorting will be required other then segregating non-paper items, i.e. candy wrappers, food and beverage containers, paper towels, hardcover books and cardboard, which is recycled separately. Definitions:

Mixed Paper – All paper colored, lined, white, mailings/junk mail, newspapers, magazines and catalogs, envelopes, file folders, etcetera

Cardboard – Cartons/Corrugated/Boxes and other bulk/heavy paper containers i.e. cartons that contained bulk items like pencils, chalk, envelopes, folders, etc...

Food and beverage containers – Candy wrappers, beverage cups, cans, bottles, milk and juice containers, sandwich wrappers, plates and cafeteria trays etcetera.

Container Use:

  • Small Blue Recycling containers placed at each desk, work area or class room. These containers will be used for all Mixed Paper.
  • Large Blue Recycling Hampers will be located in copy rooms and other centrally located areas.
  • Standard trash receptacles for all other refuse.

Material Management:

  • Individuals responsible for generating the material will empty small blue recycling containers into the large blue recycling containers.
  • Designated personnel within the Facilities Management Department will manage large Blue Recycling Hampers on pickup days.
  • Night maintainers will handle standard trash receptacles.
  • Cardboard items are to be broken down by the person responsible and placed in designated areas with regular refuses for removal by night maintainers.
  • Night maintainers, shippers/receivers, cafeteria, bookstore staff and others who generate large volumes of cardboard will breakdown and palletize cardboard in designated areas for pickup.
  • Small volumes of Periodicals may be included with Mixed Paper. Large volumes from the Library and other areas will be removed in bulk by designated personnel from Facilities and palletized for recycling.
  • Hardcover Books – These are currently not recyclable, unless the bindings are removed. Attempts should be made to reuse via a book exchange or donation program.
