Canoe/Kayak Trips

This annual favorite is usually scheduled for mid-June.  Join a hardy handful of MCC employees and students who “take to the river” at the Bellegarde Boathouse in Lowell.  This afternoon/evening trip features canoe and kayak adventures on the mighty (but serene) Merrimack River.  Though a date for Summer 2015 has not yet been set, stay tuned for more information in early Spring for this great water adventure! Center for Health & Wellness

The Center for Health and Wellness (CHW) coordinates a wide variety of health and wellness resources, activities, events, and facilities on each campus, striving to inspire individual and community health in a variety of ways. Stop by and visit us to meet our staff and learn more about our services.  The CHW provides over the counter relief such as aspirin/ibuprofen, Band-Aids, ice packs, antibiotic gel, feminine hygiene products, and throat lozenges.  The CHW also offers equipment for blood pressure reading and checking weight.  Stop by to meet our friendly staff and learn more about what we offer to the campus community.

Community Garden

The MCC Community Garden on the Bedford Campus offers a community resource for gardening enthusiasts, and also a tranquil space to visit.  MCC students and employees are encouraged to adopt a plot (for free!) to maintain their own section of the garden.  Perfect for vegetables or flowers, this garden offers a convenient, community based approach to agriculture.  Much of the produce grown is donated to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank.  Volunteers are always needed in the spring to help prepare the garden for the growing season.  Check out pics and descriptions of previous events:  2013, 2014.  For more information, contact Evan Rees at erees@mail.middlesex.edu.

Daily Walking Groups

Lowell City Slickers
New for Fall 2014, the Lowell Daily Walking Group meets at 12:30 p.m. in the Lowell City Lobby for a 15 minute group walk.  Open to all members of the campus community.  No registration necessary – just show up to walk.  Perfect for a quick break, a breath of fresh air, and time with new or familiar colleagues and students.  In the winter months, this group may move to indoor walking, completing laps of each floor in the Cowan Center.  

Bedford Quad Squad
Flexible, fun, free, fitness - what more could you ask for with exercise!!??  The Center for Health and Wellness is thrilled to announce the debut of the Quad Squad – a daily walking group on the Bedford Campus.  Walkers will meet between 12:30-1:30 p.m. to walk laps around the Bedford Quad.  Walk 1 lap or 50 laps – you decide.  Can’t be there at 12:30?  Have to leave before 1:30?  No problem – just show up when you can and leave when you need to!  Walking is a perfect way to get exercise in a comfortable, social manner – chat with colleagues as you increase your circulation and get your muscles moving.  You will also enjoy the benefits if fresh air, deeper breaths, and a change of scenery.  No rules here – just an easy, convenient, social way to increase exercise in your life.  Even if you only try it once, find out what a difference a walk can make in your work day – return to your office feeling refreshed, energized, and invigorated! Quad Squad starts on Wednesday, September 3rdand continues daily (Monday-Friday) throughout the Fall 2014 semester.  There is no formal process for registration or participation – just show up when you are available.

Fitness Trail

Get your walking shoes ready and check out the MCC Fitness Trail in Bedford - a walking/hiking trail in the scenic woods of the Bedford This 1.25 mile long Fitness Trail consists of a self-guided 10-station walking/jogging fitness trail in the scenic 40 acres of land surrounding the Bedford Campus. This trail serves as a recreational resource for walking, hiking skiing/snowshoeing, viewing wildlife, fitness enthusiasts, class field trips, and much more. The MCC Fitness Trail system, situated within the scenic woods of the Bedford campus, consists of a l.25 mile, 10-station Fit-Trail with a separate .75 mile loop around a tranquil pond. The trails traverse the perimeter of a frog pond, pass through stands of pine forest, and wind through open meadows and fields. Fern beds, stone walls, waterfalls, quiet pools, and a wide variety of plant and animal wildlife make the Fitness Trail a memorable experience.

Gender Inclusive Restrooms

Middlesex Community College is committed to recognizing equity and inclusion as the foundation for excellence and creativity. In that spirit, we are pleased to announce 9 restrooms campus-wide that have been identified as gender inclusive, single-stall restrooms. These restrooms are available for any MCC student or employee who feels more comfortable in a private restroom. For after-hours access to these restrooms, please contact Public Safety for assistance. These restrooms have all been identified with door signs indicating gender inclusion.

Health & Wellness Expo

The annual Health and Wellness Expos are a great way to learn more about local health and wellness resources, services, businesses, and programs.  The 2015 Wellness Expos will be held from 10a-1p on Wednesday, February 11th in Bedford and Wednesday, February 25th in Lowell.   Stop by for giveaways, samples, demonstrations, and a lot of useful information.  Annual highlights include free chair massage, free tarot card and palm reading, acupuncture, and an interactive scavenger hunt.  For more information, e-mail wellness@middlesex.mass.edu.

Hiking Trips

Hiking is a great way to get exercise, meet other people, explore new territory, enjoy nature, have an adventure, and accomplish something significant.  This Fall 2014, join us for a hike up the beloved Mt. Monadnock, offering remarkable scenery and views.  This hike is free for all members of the MCC campus community.  Transportation and snacks will be provided for this event on Saturday, October 25th.  Family and friends are welcome to join – the more the merrier.  Questions or to register?  Contact Jonathan at crockettj@middlesex.mass.edu

Lifeworks (EAP)

MCC employees are eligible for a tremendous wealth of free resources through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) called Lifeworks  Lifeworks offers guidance and support on a wide variety of personal matters related to personal health, family, finances, legal matters, relationships, and much, much more.   All employees have a unique username and password to be able to access the full scope of these services and information.   More than online resources, many services provided by Lifeworks include speaking with professionals on the phone about specific resources.  This is a tremendously valuable collection of resources – check it out!

Meditation

Meditation is offered every Friday from 12:30-1:00 on both the Lowell and Bedford campuses.  Facilitated by MCC employees Lynn Gregory and Bob Fera, these sessions are free, open to beginners and experienced meditators, and are a terrific way to gain the myriad benefits of meditation (or experience it for the first time).  In Lowell, medication occurs in LF016 (Federal Building basement), and in Bedford it occurs in the Campus Center, Room 216.  No appointment or registration necessary – just show up with an open mind and a desire to learn or practice mediation in a safe, comfortable environment.  For more information, e-mail wellness@middlesex.mass.edu.

Outdoor Adventure Club

The Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) is a very active student cub which strives to provide low-cost recreational activities for the campus community.  Annual adventures typically include kayaking, hiking, ski/snowboard, indoor rock climbing, and community service activities.  Open to all members of the campus community, these events are a terrific way to meet other students/staff, get exercise, have a great adventure, learn new skills, and have new experiences.  Check out their previos adventure at Tuckerman's Ravine - pics and descirption here.

Parties, Socials, and Gatherings

MCC offers a variety of annual parties, socials, and gatherings such as retirement parties, appreciation luncheons, holiday parties, recreational activities, and community events open to all members of the campus community. Employees are strongly encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to connect with colleagues in a fun, social setting. These events are often free and are a great way to expand your connections and be a part of the larger MCC campus community.

Personal Counseling and Consultation

MCC offers free, short-term personal counseling for all enrolled MCC students, provided by licensed mental health counselors Lynn Gregory and Marilyn Yeo.  For more information, check out their Personal Counseling website.  Ideal for students who may need some personal support or guidance – this is a terrific resource on both the Lowell and Bedford campuses.   For MCC employees dealing with students whose behavior is of concern, don’t hesitate to consult with one of the personal counselors for strategies and support.  If an employee needs support of a more personal nature, please check out all the wonderful resources available through MCC’s Employee Assistance Program, Lifeworks.

Positivity Seminar

MCC faculty Bob Fera provides a refreshing, transformative seminar on Positivity.  This free seminar introduces strategies, provides research, and invites discussion, all designed to encourage participants to harness the power of positive thinking, as a way to improve their overall quality of life and reframe their existence in positive ways.  This remarkable seminar is open to a small group annually – please contact Bob Fera directly at ferar@middlesex.mass.edu to learn more about the next upcoming Positivity Seminar.

Ski and Snowboard Trips

MCC traditionally offers a ski/snowboard trip each Spring to the campus community.  This year’s trip is scheduled for Saturday, February 7th – we will be traveling to Mt. Sunapee for a full day of mountain-based action and adventure.  Participants may purchase rental equipment, lessons, or just a lift ticket.  All skill levels welcome.  Cost is usually between $40-$80, depending on options requested (ticket, rentals, lessons, etc).  For more information or to register, e-mail wellness@middlesex.mass.edu.

Stressbuster Week

The week before finals is Stressbuster Week.  In an effort to help reduce stress and anxiety for students and staff, the Center for Health & Wellness offers a variety of activities and events, including therapeutic dogs on campus, free snacks, free chair massage, random acts of kindness, and movies.  Sponsored by the Center for Health and Wellness and the Middlesex Activities Crew, Stressbuster Week is a great way to take a break from the chaos of finals. Walking Meetings

The Center for Health & Wellness encourages walking meetings whenever possible.  Walking meetings are ideal for meetings with 2 or 3 people, which don’t require reading, writing, or computer use, but which are more geared toward verbal brainstorming, discussion, and communication-based engagement.  Research shows that mild physical activity increases mental stimulation and awareness, and walking meetings are often more productive than traditional sitting meetings.  Try it out for yourself and see how it works for you.  Anecdotally, 10 out of 10 MCC employees who have experienced walking meetings say it is more productive, enjoyable, and satisfying than a traditional sitting meeting. Wellness Course (1-credit)

Recognizing that personal wellness is a transferable life skill directly related to student success, MCC offers a 1-credit wellness course each semester. This course explores the myriad components of health and wellness as highlighted by the wellness wheel. This course encourages students to assess their current wellness level, recognize the impact of their choices in life, and empowers them to recognize alternative choices and to make healthier decisions in the future.

Wellness Wheel

The Wellness Wheel is the symbolic backbone of all-things-wellness at Middlesex Community College.  The wellness wheel highlights 8 specific components of personal health and wellness, including physical, emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual, occupational, environmental, and financial elements, each with their own definition and description.  The wellness wheel demonstrates the interconnection between different aspects of wellness, and reminds us that health and wellness is so much more than just exercise and nutrition.

Yoga

Want some YOGA in your life?  Who doesn’t?!  Back by popular demand, this 12-week YOGA program meets every Tuesday from 4-5 p.m. at 45 Middle St on the MCC Lowell campus and is open to all members of the MCC community.   Facilitated by certified YOGA instructor and former MCC faculty member Shelli DeMarkles, this class is perfect for all abilities.  Shelli is a dynamic, vibrant, skilled instructor who welcomes and values all participants.  YOGA mats will be provided – just show up with your good attitude and spirit of adventure.  Thanks for considering this wonderful way to get some get physical and mental wellness in your life! Please be sure to pass this info along to colleagues, peers, and friends who might also be interested.
