Darlene Love
Proclaimed by Rolling Stone Magazine as “one of the greatest singers of all time,”
singer and actress Darlene Love was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011 by Bette Midler, a great fan of her work.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Love has been performing since 1959, and has been associated with acts such as The Echoes, The Blossoms, The Crystals, Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, Tom Jones, the Ronettes, the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, Johnny Rivers, and Sonny and Cher.
A 1995 Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer award winner, Love won an Oscar for Best Documentary at the 2013 Academy Awards where she sang a powerful acceptance speech on behalf of all of the performers in the winning film, “Twenty Feet from Stardom.” As she raised her award, the entire house gave her a standing ovation, led by a wildly applauding Bill Murray. It was another special moment in a career full of accomplishments. She also received a Grammy award for the soundtrack of the film.
Since the early sixties, Love has appeared on numerous television programs and on Broadway, running the gamut from her weekly appearances on “Shindig” to a recent guest spot on the PBS special “Women Who Rock.” An autobiographical film is currently in progress with a development deal from Oprah Winfrey based on Love’s book “My Name is Love.”
Her Billboard hits include “He’s A Rebel,” “The Boy I’m Gonna Marry,” “Wait ‘Til My Bobby Gets Home,” “He’s Sure the Boy I Love,” and the number one holiday classic “Christmas Baby Please Come Home,” a song that she performed annually with Paul Shaffer and the CBS Symphony Orchestra on “The Late Show with David Letterman” for some 29 years before Letterman retired. Shaffer said, “Darlene Love is Rock N’ Roll!” She continues the long-standing tradition by performing Christmas shows each year.
