What is Adult Education?

Adult Education at one time meant the teaching of remedial and basic skills. This definition has changed over the past fifteen years. The term basic skills now encompasses a broader knowledge base and higher level thinking skills, including information technology, information literacy and problem solving. The job descriptions and skills needed for even entry level positions continue to change and increase.

We are in the Post-industrial Age. All workers need to have skill sets and to upgrade them on an ongoing basis. Companies should encourage employees to attend classes to develop portable skills, build confidence, and prepare for job advancement. Companies whose workers increase their basic skills find that they have improved production, retention, and competition because of their stronger workforce.
