[ News Brief ] MCC Partners with UMass in STEM Education Initiative Middlesex Community College will take part in ABLE 4 STEM, a new initiative led by the University of Massachusetts, in collaboration with the state’s 15 community colleges. Under the direction of UMass President Robert L. Caret, the initiative’s goal is to double the number of under-represented minority students graduating with STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) degrees. The program takes effect for the 2013 fall semester. The ABLE 4 STEM program will establish pathways for associate-degree graduates to enter STEM majors at any UMass campus. In addition, UMass will designate some courses to qualify as “reverse transfer” credits that will allow students who have previously earned community college credits to complete an associate degree while working toward a bachelor’s degree at UMass. ABLE 4 STEM has been recognized as an important program that addresses economic and social needs. “STEM plays a vital role in our growth strategy here in Massachusetts – a strategy focused on education, innovation and infrastructure,” said Gov. Deval Patrick. “I applaud UMass for recognizing the importance of STEM and look forward to working with our leaders at UMass and our community colleges to implement a successful program that will ensure that all of our students are prepared for careers in the 21st century global economy.” i For more information on the ABLE 4 STEM program, visit http://www.massachusetts.edu/news/news.cfm?mode=detail&news_id=1978 C ost-Eff ecti v e Cost-Effective Tailor -Made T ailor - M a de Di v er s e Deli v ery M eth od s Diverse Delivery Methods A Perfect Partner P erf ect P artn er Connect with us... , 978-656-3009 www.middlesex.mass.edu/bus_ind 978-656-3009 www.middlesex.mass.edu/bus_ind Special events call for special places.
