OVERVIEW For secure access to the Internet and Middlesex CC network resources PREREQUISTES § Windows XP Professional (with service pack 2) § Wireless 802.11a, b, or g § Network Login ID (username/pw) PRE-CHECKS Network cables/cards disconnected. Laptop booted. Wireless card inserted. A. Navigating to the Wireless Network Connection Properties 1. Right-click Networking Icon in system tray of desktop window If no network icon, continue at NETWORK ICON NOT PRESENT 2. Select Open Network Connections Network Connections window opens 3. Right-click Wireless Network Connection [number] entry, if first option is Enable, click it, otherwise select Properties option Enable msg shows/closes, if chosen 4. If you didn’t select Properties option in previous step, do it now. The Wireless Network Connection [number] Properties window opens B. Setting Wireless Network Connection Properties 1. General Tab § Leave connections items as is § Checkmark – Show icon in notification… § Checkmark – Notify me… 2. Wireless Networks Tab § Checkmark – Use windows to… 3. Click Advanced button, NOT tab § Select – Any available network… radio button § Click Close button C. Adding General Access to Preferred Networks List 1. On Wireless Network tab, remove “MCC_HOTSPOT” if on Preferred networks list 2. Click Add button on Wireless Network Tab 3. Association Tab § Enter Network name: MCC_GENERAL Press Tab key § Network Authentication: Open § Data encryption: WEP § Checkmark – The key is… § All other checkboxes are empty 4. Connection Tab § Checkmark – Connect when… 5. Authentication Tab § Checkmark – Enable IEEE… § Select – Protected EAP (PEAP) from dropdown for EAP type: § All other checkboxes are empty § Click Properties button

D. Setting Protected EAP Properties 1. Protected EAP Properties window § Uncheck Validate server certificate checkbox § Leave Trusted Root Certification Authorities as is § Select Authentication Method - Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) § Checkmark – Enable Fast… § All other checkboxes are empty § Click Configure button 2. EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window § Uncheck Automatically use… checkbox § Click OK E. Closing-Up and Having Changes Take Effect 1. Click OK twice more Wireless Network Tab shows MCC_GENERAL added to Preferred networks list 2. Close remaining open windows by clicking OK Wait up to 2 minutes or until balloon message appears F. Connecting to a Wireless Access Point Starting from your desktop window: If balloon msg appeared, start at step 5; if msg did not appear, continue to next step 1. Right-click Networking Icon in system tray of desktop window 2. Select Open Network Connections Network Connections window opens 3. Select Wireless Network Connection [number] entry Status of the connection displays in Details section to the left 4. Double-click Wireless Network Connection [number] entry 5. If balloon msg says “Click here to…” this is your first: General access login, login since password change, login since removal and re-add of MCC_GENERAL from Preferred networks list § Click balloon msg § Enter username/pw (leave domain blank) on Enter Credentials window § Click OK As a result of either step 4 or step 5, a balloon message appears. If balloon msg says “Connected to MCC_GENERAL…” a connection has been made to the wireless access point 6. Click start à My Computer à My Network Places à View Network Connections Possible connections display in Network Connections window 2. Continue at step 3 in Section A of Wireless Initial Setup
