Employment Outlook

Starting salaries for biotechnology technicians range from $19,000-28,000, and benefits often include tuition support for further studies. The need for qualified technicians will continue to grow. Since our program began in 1990, nearly 100% of graduates have been employed by local biotechnology industry companies.

In today's workplace, advancing up the career ladder often depends on the employee's ability to combine specific job training with the ability to communicate, understand, and team with others. These value-added factors are emphasized in the programs curriculum and internship.

Biotech has more jobs than people

By Catherine Fahy, Staff Writer

Recent legislation that loosened biotechnology manufacturing regulations and speeded the approval process governing new products will spur job growth in the biotechnology industry, according to Susan Moulton, director of education at the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council.

In particular, the biotech manufacturing sector will be hiring in the coming months as many companies ready their product for market, she predicted.

Employment at select companies "is up a good 10-15 percent," said Moulton. Job openings in such companies can be found in all departments, including sales, research and development, and manufacturing.

The only problem on the horizon is a shortage of qualified personnel. The state's colleges and universities are not graduating enough people trained for jobs in biotech manufacturing employment, industry experts warn. As a result, companies may not be able to fill critical posts.

"There is really a growing gap," said Marc Goldberg, president of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Institute in Worcester. "That is happening across the board."
