activities and workshops it created a sense of a team and gave our group
cohesiveness. We were teambuilding while contributing to the overall

Middlesex
Carnegie Summer Institute 2006 & New England Faculty Development Consortium:
A Focus on the Scholarship of
Teaching and Learning
at the Lowell Campus, June 2, 2006
This year the third annual institute was jointly sponsored by NEFDC and involved participants from COPPER Cluster
institutions (locally and nationally) and other New England area institutions.
In addition to MCC's CASTL Group members, twelve other MCC faculty members
attended free of charge. (192 participants)
Middlesex
Carnegie Summer Institute 2005:
A Focus on the Scholarship of
Teaching and Learning
at the Lowell Campus, June 8-10, 2005
This second annual three-day Institute involved participants from COPPER Cluster
institutions and other institutions from the region and around the country.
In addition to MCC's CASTL Group members, ten other MCC faculty members
attended free of charge. Presentations and workshops were offered in the
following three tracks: SoTL Basics, Learning Communities, Outcomes
Assessment, Diversity, and Service Learning. (115 participants)
Middlesex Carnegie Summer Institute 2004: A Focus on the Scholarship of Teaching
and Learning at the Lowell Campus, June 24-26, 2004
This three-day Institute involved participants from COPPER Cluster
institutions and other institutions from the region and around the country.
In addition to MCC's CASTL Group members, nine other MCC faculty members
attended free of charge. Presentations and workshops were offered in the
following three tracks: Introductory SoTL, Advanced SoTL and Supporting
SoTL, and Teaching and Learning Strategies. (70 participants)
Presentation on
the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, MCC's CASTL, and Sample Projects
completed by MCC Scholars at MCC's Faculty & Staff Association Meeting
(all-college meeting) February 26th, 2004
Presentation with Powerpoints on the history of SoTL, SoTL projects in Biology
and English, and the value of MCC's CASTL for faculty.
Workshop on Cases and Problem-Based
Learning: Two-part seminar by Jessie Klein and Kate Sweeney in Spring 2003
This was a
3-part workshop that engaged participants in an authentic problem situation
and presented examples of how problem based learning and case studies are
being used in several disciplines at MCC. Techniques for writing cases and
assessing their impact on student learning were discussed. Participants had
an opportunity to create an activity and assessment tool to be used in their
courses.

Middlesex Community College Professional Day on October 1, 2002
Posters and powerpoint presentations on SoTL projects in a variety of
disciplines as part of the Showcase of Best Practices and Innovations. (25
participants)

"Closing the circle: Integrating inquiry and outcomes-based assessment to
enhance student learning."
Workshop on Engaged Pedagogies on
June 1 and 2, 2000, with follow up session in fall of 2000
Review of theory and application of case studies, problem-based learning, and
service-learning. Participants designed and piloted one project and presented
results to colleagues in the fall. (18 participants)
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning:
Presentation at Middlesex Community College Professional Day on April 4, 2000
Highlighted critical aspects on the scholarship of teaching and learning with
concrete examples from a wide range of disciplines. (46 participants)
Fueling
Students’ Intrinsic Motivation with CAR: Seminar at Middlesex Community College
Professional Day on November 3, 1999
Experiential workshop modeling two different teaching styles followed by group
discussion of how these styles affect student motivation. Brief theoretical
presentation of research on motivation focusing on competence, autonomy, and
relatedness. (CAR) (40 participants)
Fostering Student Motivation: Two-part
seminar on April 5 and May 3, 1999
Presented overview of research on motivation and through discussion developed
strategies to link theory with classroom practice. Participants’ projects
were compiled into a booklet. (45 participants)
