I am looking at the Learning Communities on campus. We have been using a 20 item questionaire for students looking at behaviors we think are related to student success in class. I am comparing student scores from Learning Communities with comparable stand alone classes.

I am interested in how feedback from faculty to students (and vice versa) changes the classroom experience. I am also interested in classroom climate.

Jen Hawrylciw jhawrylciw@necc.mass.edu Northern Essex CC Elementary and Early Childhood Education I will be exploring the classroom environment and how it affects student learning. In particular, I will show how the effective use of space helps build communities of learners to achieve academically. I will specifically look at space as it relates to teaching future teachers, and design a model classroom that can be utilized as a teaching tool for both college students and instructors.  The model classroom space will be piloted in the fall of 2004. I will be gathering data and feedback from the college community in order to improve upon the model classroom during the fall semester. I am new to SoTL and looking forward to the experience.

Writing Community Text: I am redesigning my English Composition I class, hoping to create a more relevant course for the students by 1)focusing on the students' communities through assignments involving archival research about their towns, interviews with community members and research on community issues; and 2)creating a "community" within the classroom through "public revision," presentations of papers, and shared reflections about the writing process.

These are some of my particular areas of interest: Pedagogy (in any modality - classroom online combination) to better engage students for more meaningful learning. Creating learning environments that empower community college students. This are two areas in which I have experience and have "lessons learned" that I am happy to share: Teaching - Constructivist learning online and in the classroom - use of self and formative assessment strategies collaborative work peer feedback and evaluation etc. Professional Development - Online and Hybrid Course Development Programs
Stephen Mathis smathis@necc.mass.edu Northern Essex CC English

For my on-going SOTL project, I'm meeting with former students to find out, in their words, what they actually "took" from my composition classes. I've always wondered what they really did and didn't learn, so this is a chance for me to find out. Along the way, I'm hoping to get a sense of the writing demands placed on them once they leave the course, since so may colleagues feel so comfortable in complaining to us that, "These students don't know how to write!" I'll let you all know what I find out. Stephen

Interests? Music, especially decent local live music. I'm no longer feeling like an expert in much, but I'm starting to figure out that I have a lot of questions about the intersection between class (socio-economic), students, and assignments.
