What is an RLO?
An RLO, or Reusable Learning Object, is an interactive tool which allows the user to utilize different modalities of learning and learning styles in order to gain knowledge about something in various ways.
CPT Prep - Reading
Each student interested in enrolling in courses at Middlesex Community College must take a Computerized Placement Test (CPT) in Reading, Writing and Math. The following is an interactive program designed to provide information on basic skills tested on the Reading CPT along with a series of diagnostic questions.
CPT READING - this file is in .swf format. It can be opened with a web browser or downloaded and opened on a computer by right clicking on the file name and selecting "Save Link as" and then opening on the saved computer.
Poetry
Poetry is often considered the great literary mystery. The following resources are designed to help people become more acquainted with the basics of understanding poetry, offer some auditory examples of poems being read aloud, and provide links to other helpful websites.
POETRY - this RLO consists of a basic glossary of poetry terms and types, shows examples of a number of common types of poems, and gives a beginner's guide to poetry analysis. This file is in .swf format. POETRY - Audio Files
The Boston Consulting Group has put together a wonderful audio resource, which combines readings of poetry with poignant introductions and analyses. Some featured poets include Robert Frost, Robert Hayden, and Emily Dickinson. For each poet, there are three audio files: an introduction to the poet/poem, the poem itself, and an analysis of the poem. Clicking on the poem's title will bring you to the text of the poem, along with the audio reading.
