Welcome to

The Literature of Prisons homepage

You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view....
until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
Atticus Finch in Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird
This course is designed to develop your understanding of incarceration from the prisoner's point of view. We read novels, plays, essays and a book on prison issues as well as visit a prison and talk to inmates.
Voices Behind Bars came about as a result of ten years I spent teaching and directing plays at Framingham Women's Prison. The prisoners taught me and hopefully I will teach you to think more deeply about a subject largely ignored in our fast past society, our freedom.
The course will give you insight, challenge you and make you consider new points of view. Please see course description on my homepage and/or syllabus for more information.
