The MCC Librarians look forward to working with faculty, students and staff to meet your information needs.. The library offers these services to help with your class assignments, programs and research needs. Please keep us in mind as you develop your courses, begin a project, or start an assignment.

Ask a Librarian

Reference assistance via e-mail is available to answer questions for you and your students. Answers to questions will be provided in a timely manner.  If you need immediate assistance, call the Bedford Library (781-280-3706) or Lowell Library (978 656-3005) during library hours. In addition, the library subscribes to Mass Answers, a chat reference service, available to you when the library is closed.


Copiers

Photocopies are available for student and staff use.  Copies are .10 a page.


Course Reserves

Textbooks, articles, practice exams, and other personal copies are placed on reserve by college faculty and staff to support the college mission and classroom instruction.  For additional information, please see the Reserves help page.


Digital Media Content

The library has access to a collection of downloadable EBooks and EAudiobooks from various vendors.. Subjects covered in these collections include nursing, careers, criminal justice, classic literature and current fiction.  Please contact Laura Horgan if you are interested in more information.


Electronic Classroom

Electronic classrooms are available in the Bedford and Lowell Libraries. The classrooms include networked student computers, an instructor workstation,  projector, white board, and display screen. Additionally the Alcott Room (Bedford Library) has a KVM (Keyboard Video Monitor) adaptor for easy laptop connection. Contact either the Bedford or Lowell Library to request a room. Embedded Librarian

A librarian can be enrolled in your Blackboard course to answer research questions, help with technical issues in accessing the library databases, and to help students with creating source citations. For additional information about this service please contact Ellen Royalty, Public Services Coordinator, Bedford Campus.


Holds

The library catalog allows students, faculty and staff to place holds on items owned by Middlesex and all other NOBLE libraries.  Simply use the request button on the item record screen and enter your library card number and Library PIN.  If you do not have a card or can't remember your PIN call the Bedford Library 781 280 3708 or the Lowell Library 978 656 3004 for assistance.  If you prefer additional assistance is available through email or instant messenger from the library home page.


Instant Messenger Reference

A chat reference box can be embedded into your Blackboard course shell to assist students with answering reference questions, or to offer citation and technical help for your students. An example of this is found on the Library home page and under Reference Services in the Library2Go Blackboard Course.  If you would like further information or wish to be enrolled in the Library2Go course contact Laura Horgan


Interlibrary Loan

Librarians on either campus can assist you or your students in requesting books, articles, and other materials that we do not own  from other libraries.. You can request materials directly from the MCC/NOBLE catalog or the State Virtual Catalog with a library card and Library PIN. As always, material purchase requests are always welcome.
 


Internet Access

Access to the internet and the world wide web is available on workstations at the Bedford and Lowell Libraries.  You will need to know your student login and password to connect.  For additional assistance within the library contract a reference librarian.  Information on computer problems and troubleshooting is also available.


Journal Alert Service

 A RSS feed can link you to one of over 15,000 periodical titles the library currently has available through EBSCO and ProQuest. The link can be for personal use or added to your Blackboard course shell for your students. Contact Laura Horgan if you are interested



Library Blog

The library has a blog that posts searching tips, changes to library hours, news about our databases, technical advice, and websites of interest. The library blog is available on the Library Home page and is available through RSS feed.


Library2Go

The library will assist you in embedding library content in your Blackboard course shell such as a search box to the library catalog, direct links to magazine and journal articles, links to databases, electronic content and more. Contact Laura Horgan for additional information.


Library Instruction

Library Orientation sessions, covering materials pertinent to your assignment, can be requested at the Bedford or Lowell Campus Library. A librarian will confirm availability and discuss details.  Reference librarians are also available via telephone in Bedford 781 280-3706 or Lowell 978 656-3005 to book library sessions.


Mass Answers

Mass Answers provides chat based reference service 24/7 for patrons when the library is closed.  The service does not supply information about Middlesex policies or electronic resources.  If you are having difficulty getting into our databases and the library is closed check to see if your session cookies are enabled from within your browser or email Laura Horgan


Plagiarism Reporting Tool

SafeAssign, a plagiarism reporting tool is embedded directly within your Blackboard course shell.  To use this tool it must be enabled through the control panel.  Handouts on how to use this tool for faculty and staff are available along with general plagiarism information.  For additional information see the Plagiarism help page


Reference Assistance

Library staff is available to answer your questions via the telephone (781 280-3706 in Bedford; 978 656-3005 in Lowell), email, or IM through the AIM Widget available on the library home page when the library is open. When the library is closed connect to Mass Answers.


Remote access to the Library Catalog

The MCC Library Catalog is available via the web to patrons on campus or off.  From the catalog you can sign-in to your account with your library barcode and library PIN to renew items, request materials from other campus locations, and check on your holds requests.  If you are having difficulties locating materials and need further assistance call Laura Horgan at 781 280 3702.


Scanners

A scanner is available at each campus locations for student and staff use.  Instructions for scanning pictures and text are available.


Subject Research Guides

Talk to one of our reference librarians concerning a customized guide for your class, assignment or program. These guides will help students locate key resources on a specific topic, search the catalog, and access our databases.
