POSITION:
Part-Time Laboratory Technician (20 hours/week)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide technical support services to faculty and staff who teach science courses and maintain a sanitary and efficient laboratory environment
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Reports to the Associate Dean of Mathematics and Sciences Division
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
· Set up all laboratory experiments in the biological sciences accurately and on time.
· Dismantle laboratory experiments in a timely manner.
- Maintain the order, cleanliness, and safety of the laboratories and storage facilities.
· Request supplies and equipment for the biological sciences with the approval of the department chair.
- Perform simple maintenance procedures on equipment and ensure yearly maintenance agreements are renewed for equipment.
- Maintain appropriate records for all purchase orders for repair work on equipment
- Make recommendations for equipment repair and replacements.
- Maintain an inventory of all supplies and equipment.
- Provide assistance or instruction to faculty in use of science and AV equipment as needed.
- Conduct the proper disposal of all laboratory waste, including biohazardous material, coordinating with college Environmental Health and Safety Officer.
- Follow OSHA safety procedures and maintain files of current MSDS sheets.
- Collaborate with other science technicians to ensure appropriate disposal of chemical and biological waste.
- Other duties as assigned by the Dean, Associate Dean or Science Department Chair
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum bachelor’s degree in a life science
Required skills for this position are:
- Successful laboratory management experience
- Knowledge of general laboratory techniques
- Experience in teaching or working in a life science laboratory
- Experience in preparing microbiological media and/or cultures utilizing proper aseptic transfer and inoculation techniques from various sources such as slants, plates, lyophilized disks, broths etc.
- Experience in using an autoclav
- Ability to prepare standard laboratory solutions such as molar solutions
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated skills in creating and maintaining open communication and human relations.
- Experience and/or knowledge in working with students, staff and faculty of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.

SALARY:
Hourly wage not to exceed $19.55
