POSITION: Alternative Middle School Special Education Inclusion Specialist B.R.I.D.G.E. Program at the David J. McHugh Alternative Middle School

ROLE/RESPONSIBILITIES:
This 11 month, full-time, grant-funded position is responsible for modifying academic curriculum, doing independent assessments, and providing individual and classroom support to student and classroom teachers as direct service for 7th and 8th grade students from diverse backgrounds assigned to a small alternative education setting. Serving as an integral member of the middle school team, the special education inclusion specialist will be a full-time participant in and contributor to the program's planning, development and implementation. This position reports to the Director, BRIDGE Program at the David J. McHugh Alternative Middle School, a Middlesex Community College initiative funded by the Lowell Public Schools. Occasional evening and weekend hours are possible, as needed. The primary work assignment for this position is the David J. McHugh Alternative Middle School Building, Lowell. Position contingent on continued grant funded.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Modify academic curriculum to meet the needs of student learners with special needs.
2. Do independent assessments on students who are suspected of having learning disabilities.
3. Update and revise individual assessment plans as needed.
4. Provide individual students support to students as needed.
5. Attend educational and team meetings.
6. Utilize a team teaching approach with regular educational teachers and provide in class support
7. Assist the director and middle school team in developing a strong, comprehensive, alternative middle school curriculum that demonstrates quality and challenges students.
8. Collaborate with director and middle school team in integrating life/social skills strategies across the school's curriculum and human service components.
9. Contribute proactively, thoughtfully, and productively to the school's planning, development, and implementation.
10. Fulfill all case management, tracking, and reporting requirements as assigned.
11. Foster a positive classroom learning environment and contribute to a positive middle school climate that provides safety, support, discipline and structure.
12. Utilize appropriate technology to facilitate teaching and learning.
13. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• 2-3 years related teaching/direct service experience and appropriate Bachelor's degree required. (Master's preferred)
• Experience in elementary and/or middle school education.
• Massachusetts Special Education certification required.
• Knowledge and experience in special education inclusion model
• Experience and/or knowledge in working with students, staff and faculty of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.

SALARY: $40,000.00 - $45,000.000. Starting salary is dependent upon experience and qualifications.
