| Course Description |
|
| This course is recommended for dental hygienists in preparation for the NERB exam in local anesthesia and complies with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry regulations for the administration of local anesthesia. At the completion of this course, hygienists will be able to administer safe, effective and painless local anesthesia with confidence and competence. This course consists of an online pre-study, interactive presentations and more than twenty hours of clinical instruction in which hygienists will have thirty injection experiences. The strength of this hands-on course is the amount of actual time that you will be administering local anesthesia to your classmates. This process involves administering and receiving 30 injection experiences. This provides confidence with multiple injection techniques taught. Please note that a plain local anestheic will be used and we do not admininster a full cartridge per injection. Upon successful completion of this course a certificate and 56 CEUs will be awarded. |

| About the faculty |
|
| Debra November-Rider
Debra November-Rider, RDH, BS, is the lead instructor in the didactic and clinical components of this course. Debra has taught local anesthesia to dental hygienists since 1998 and was the previous course director and instructor for pain management and local anesthesia lab at the Forsyth Dental Hygiene Program at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She is a member of the American Dental Hygiene Association and the Massachusetts Dental Hygiene Association. Debra earned a B.S. from Northeastern University, a Certificate in Dental Hygiene from Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists and is currently pursuing her Master's degree in dental hygiene at University of Missouri, Kansas City.

Leah MacPherson
Leah MacPherson is Professor of Dental Hygiene at Middlesex Community College and has didactic and clinical responsibilities in periodontology, local anesthesia, and clinics. She has experience in general, periodontal and public health settings and has presented at many local, national and international meetings.
Leah received an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene at University of New England, an Advanced Dental Hygiene Certificate at Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists and a Masters Degree at Northeastern University. She was an Assistant Professor at Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists for seven years while conducting research at the Forsyth Institute in the Periodontal Research Center. Her previous research responsibilities included investigating various non-surgical periodontal therapies.

| Mary E. Terkoski, DDS
Dr. Terkoski has been the supervising dentist and a clinical instructor for this course as well as the Middlesex Community College Dental Hygiene program since 2005. She earned a B.S. from Georgetown University and a D.D.S. from the University of Maryland Dental School/Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. Dr. Terkoski is a member of the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
Additional experienced dental hygiene faculty will provide clinical instruction. All clinical sessions are held under the supervision of a dentist.

The goal of the Dental Hygiene Local Anesthesia Certification Training is to help prepare you for the NERB exam and to safely and effectively administer local anesthesia. You must take full responsibility for your learning and for the NERB exam preparation. To participate in this local anesthesia certification training, you are required to complete the online pre-study prior to check-in on the first day of the training. Students who do not provide the required forms or do not complete the online pre-study will not be allowed to participate in the training and will not be issued a refund.
Cancellations are accepted prior to the registration deadline for the course for students who have not accessed the online pre-study material, minus a $50 fee. After the registration deadline fees are nonrefundable. Students who have logged into the online pre-study will not be eligible for a refund even if it is prior to the registration deadline.

The online pre-study requires you to read the textbook, Handbook of Local Anesthesia, 5th editionby Stanley Malamed. It is recommended that you purchase the textbook at your earliest convenience. It may be purchased at the MCC Lowell Bookstore or online at your preferred book vendor. Log-in information for the online pre-study will be available after the registration deadline. The online pre-study is an intensive overview consisting of a comprehensive study guide and interactive presentations. It is anticipated that after you have read the textbook the online pre-study will take approximately 45-55 hours to successfully complete. The online pre-study needs to be completed in its entirety prior to attending the clinical portion of the course. Access to the Internet and an email address is required to complete the online pre-study. A high speed Internet connection and email address is required.
