Frequently Asked Questions about the Local Anesthesia Certification Training for Dental Hygienists
How do I prepare for taking the course and are there any prerequisites?
Other than being a licensed dental hygienist in good standing, having current CPR certification and filling out the necessary forms, there are no other prerequisites. After you enroll, on or about the enrollment deadline we will send you a user name and password to log onto our web site to access the online course work. All online quizzes and coursework must be completed prior to attending the on campus clinical training. Prior to accessing the online course work, purchase the text book and read chapters 1 - 19. The course text is available at the MCC bookstore or can be purchased online at http://www.rittenhousemedicallink.com/default.asp?institution=136 or through your local bookstore.
How do I access the online precourse work?
You will need access to the Internet at home or at work to complete the precourse work (approx. 45-55 hours). A high speed Internet connection is required. Your MCC user name and password will be provided to you (on or about the registration deadline), and you will be directed to a page on the MCC website. MCC uses the Blackboard interface to support all of our online courses. The Blackboard link is on the MCC home page. All information in regard to accessing and completing the online course work will be provided to each student in a letter e-mailed around the time of the registration deadline.
Is the NERB exam included in the course?
The NERB exam is not included in the course. Please visit www.Nerb.org and click on the exam link. This site explains when and where you can take the exam.
Do I have to sit as a patient and receive injections during the course?
Yes, all students must sit as a patient. If you are unable to sit as a patient you must provide a substitute to receive injections for you during the course. Practicing injection techniques on a live patient is an integral part of this course.
Do I have to wear scrubs to class?
No, scrubs are not necessary but lab appropriate attire is, including a lab coat and safety glasses. It is also suggested that you wear closed toed shoes. No sandals please.

Can I get licensed in New Hampshire if I take this course?
The regulations in New Hampshire and Massachusetts are similar but that does not mean that taking this course in Mass. will qualify you to get licensed in New Hampshire. Please contact the New Hampshire licensing board for exact information or visit http://gencourt.state.nh.us/rules/den100-500.html
Can I show up on the scheduled start date for the course and enroll for this course on the first day of class?
No. Each course has an enrollment deadline that must be adhered to. A user name and password will be distributed to each registered student for access to the online precourse work. All students must complete the online course prior to attend the on campus portion of the course.
