XML for Technical Communicators: ONLINE COURSE
This course is invaluable to anyone who needs a fast introduction to XML and its role in technical communications, such as those whose organization is deploying an XML-based documentation solution. The course presents a survey of the uses of XML in technical communication, as well as references to more in depth material. We begin with XML language essentials, DTDs, schema, and validation. It moves quickly into XML specifically for the technical writer. DITA and DocBook, which use authoring tools, publishing tools, and content management systems that provide support for these XML languages, are discussed. Technical communication tools of choice, such as Framemaker, Word, and text editors are surveyed in the context of XML. The course concludes with lessons on transformations, migrations, and formatting for the web using XSLT, XPath, and CSS. Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) and content management systems are also discussed. Knowledge of HTML is a benefit, but not required. Minimum required software: Microsoft XML Notepad editor. Required Text: XML in Technical Communication by Charles Cowan, 2008, Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators. ISBN: 10-09506459-74. Please provide a valid e-mail address when enrolling. (18 hours) $399. About the instructor: Dave Sciuto is an Engineering Manager at NetScout and travels nationwide to educate users on online training, user forums, events and documentation.
