Program details

Upon completing this course, Students will be able to build an effective web presence for business or personal use. Course topics include three essential core elements of Web Development; Effective Design Principles, HTML Programming and Graphic Design for the Web. Students will learn how to plan and design effective web sites by exploring topics such as site layout, style, and navigation elements. Each Student will create a fully functional web site in class while learning HTML (HyperText Markup Language). Text formatting, links, lists, tables, forms, frames and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), Javascript, java applets and other topics are also included.  In the Graphic Design portion of this course Students learn basic graphic design and color theory, how to edit and adapt existing photographs and graphics for Web use, as well as creating original buttons, animations, tiled and border backgrounds and more!  Students should have a working knowledge of the Windows operating system.  Textbook required.

 
Course Components:
Web Design Principles  (4 hours)
This course focuses on the principles of good web design and the essential role of the web designer in today's business environment. Topics covered include layout, style, artistic quality, navigation, performance, communication, community, e-commerce and marketing. 
HTML Programming  (23 hours)
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is used to prepare documents for the World Wide Web. This course is an introduction to HTML that focuses on creating practical, attractive Web pages that function on a variety of browsers. Text formatting, tables, links and lists, images, frames, forms, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), Javascript, Java applets and other topics are also included.  
 Web Graphic Design  (12 hours)
Students understand electronic design and digital imaging for use in developing Web sites. Students learn basic design theory, including visual elements, layout, and color theory as they pertain to electronic graphics and how to incorporate photograph-based images into electronic format. Topics include cross-platform and browser-safe colors, creating buttons, animations, rollovers, tiled and border backgrounds, navigation interfaces.

 Instructor  Cyndi Spiers
 Cyndi Cyndi Spiers has been teaching in the Non-Credit and Career Training program at Middlesex since 1996, and is the Retail Business Operations Manager for the Northern New England Region for Comcast Cable. In her current role, she manages the operation of seventeen Customer Service locations and the Company's relationships with local independent retailers throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire.  Prior to her employment at Comcast, she owned a medium-sized Internet Access and Web Development company called Chelmsford Online Services for seven years. Cyndi is a graduate of  Northeastern University and holds degrees in both Accounting and Management Information Systems.
